Any Given Day!

On Mother’s Day I received quite a few messages from people saying they were thinking of me.  In a text message someone wrote “I know how difficult this day can be”.  It’s true, Mother’s Day and many holidays can bring thoughts of my daughter.   Many of you know that my only child, Queah passed away in 2011 from colon cancer. I have written blog entries about it many times. I’m still very much a grieving mother.  But it’s not always the holidays that get me down — it’s the other days.

Case and point – today, I was driving to work with the radio on.  Some words from a song triggered a memory of Queah.  I tried to fight the feeling that was was coming over me but I couldn’t.  I started having vivid thoughts of her.  I  remembered some of the things she said to me right before she died.   I also began to remember how she struggled physically and how painful her battle was.  The next thing I knew my eyes was filled with tears and there I was once again — crying  — in my car going 70 miles an hour on the freeway headed to work. So it’s not the holiday — it’s any given day.   On this particular day the sorrow felt a little more intense.

Perhaps one of the things that made me think of her is that I’m really busy these days organizing our next Donna Terrell’s Yoga Warriors Fighting ColonCancer event.  This is our 7th annual, and our first event since Covid-19 canceled our plans last year.  The organization, affectionally called Yoga Warriors, was created after Queah died.  My daughter enjoyed the benefits of yoga when she was battling cancer.  It made her feel better when she was suffering from the disease and the cancer treatments.  Yoga Warriors also works to share the knowledge of how this disease affects more young people that in the past.   We raise money to provide yoga for cancer survivors and caregivers and other support they may need like housing when they’re in town going through treatment at area hospitals.  Last year we gave the Baptist Health Foundation a$48,000 grant to purchase the Erbe Jet 2 — the first one in Arkansas — that removes cancer in the colon through hydrosurgery, cutting surgical time in half and aiding in the healing process.  It’s a device that could have been a game changer for my daughter.

Most importantly, Yoga Warriors hopes to help people catch cancer early though awareness.  If Queah’s cancer had been caught early she might still be here with us.  And I hope fewer people will go through the sorrow that I have felt.  I wish that on no one.

Our community-wide free event is Saturday, June 19, 2021 at MacArthur Park Pavilion from 10am to 11:30am.  We’re outdoors this year for safety reasons. The eventis free but we’ll be selling yoga mats, yoga accessories, raffles tickets and taking donations at the event.  There will also be door prizes.  We hope you can join us.  You can learn more about us and donate at http://www.yogawarriors.org.

The Month Of March

The month of March has a significant meaning for me.  It’s colon cancer awareness month but it’s also the month my only child died from this horrible disease. Make no mistake – I’m a grieving mother.  My daughter Queah (pronounce: Quaya) had just turned 27 when she was diagnosed.  She fought it.  Beat it. Three and a half years later it came back with a vengeance.  I’ll never forget when she said “mom, this cancer is trying to kill me”.  It did just that on May 19, 2011.  I was her caregiver and watched her take her last breath. Part of me died right along with her.

Back then, I put many of my thoughts into words in this blog. Writing helped me through some of the darkest days. They all have titles and a few of my favorites are… “Things I Must Do”, “Charished Things” and my all time favorite, “These Three Words”. Here’s an excerpt from that post written about ten years ago…

One year, four months and 20 days.  That’s how long it’s been since colon cancer killed my daughter Queah.  There hasn’t been one single day that I haven’t thought about her since.  In fact, there was a point not so long ago when I felt I wasn’t going to make it through this – not in one piece.  The pain at times just seemed to cut right through my heart.  In the beginning I was as fast as an Olympic sprinter – I could outrun the pain.  I found many distractions with the biggest being my work.  But the faster I ran, grief was always on my heels.  As I write this story I am still very much shaken, very much heartbroken.   Recently someone brought to my attention — someone made something very clear to me through three important words that I now can’t get out of my head.  These three words – “it gets better”. (You can read this and other posts on this website).

No — the grief doesn’t go away but yes — it does gets better.  One thing that helped was creating the non-profit organization called Donna Terrell’s Yoga Warriors Fighting Colon Cancer.  We’re in our 7th year and we’ve been able to raise awareness of the disease – especially in young people even without a family history of colon cancer.   We’ve also introduced cancer survivors and caregivers to the benefits of yoga through yoga classes.  We’ve provided life saving nutritional supplements to cancer survivors and we’ve covered the cost of housing survivors when they’re in town for treatment at local hospitals and treatment centers. This year our organization will purchase medical equipment that can remove stage I and stage II colon cancers non-invasively.  This is huge accomplishment for us and you’ll hear more about it soon.   All of our efforts are made possible through donations and our two annual fundraisers – Yoga Warriors Community-Wide Yoga event, which is Saturday, March 14 from 10a.m. to 12p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Little Rock.  Our second annual Warrior Golf Tournament also generates funds.  It will be held Monday, September 28th at Maumelle Country Club!

It feels good to be able to help cancer survivors but I still long for my daughter.  I think about how life would be if she were still here.  I miss her so much and still cry many times when I think about or talk about her.  Yes – I’m still a grieving mother.  Yoga Warriors exists because of Queah and I know she would be proud of the work that’s being done and all the lives that have been touched in her honor.

Cash For Kindness

When you work in the TV news business you report on all kinds of stories.  Some can put the biggest smile on your face while others can leave you feeling sorrow. In addition to anchoring the news on Fox16 at 5:30PM and 9PM, I was assigned to produce a monthly segment called Cash For Kindness.  The station partnered with Arkansas Diagnostic Center in Little Rock and each month give $1,000 to someone just for being kind.  Initially, I viewed this as just another assignment – but quickly discovered how happy these stories make me feel.

The most recent story was about a woman named Monica.  She is a military veteran and after she left the service, in addition to the two children of her own, she began to take care of children in Foster Care.  Then she started adopting the children. The first child, Yasmin was adopted in 2007.  Yasmin told me she was 9 years old and thought she would never get adopted because she felt she was too old and people wanted children much younger. But Monica took her into her home and treated her no differently than her two biological children.  She loved them all. This mother of three would eventually adopt four more children and raise them all has her own.  Seven children total.

Because of all this Yasmin felt her mother should be recognized —  so she nominated her as a Cash For Kindness recipient.
Last month with no warning, Dr. Brian McGee and our Fox16 TV camera showed up at Monica’s job to tell her how she has touched lives by adopting children out of Foster Care.  Dr. McGee told her she has change to trajectory of these young lives by giving them a forever home.  Then he proceed to, one by one, place ten $100 dollar bills into Monica’s hands.

As I stood there watching I began to tear up.  Dr. McGee says there are so many stories of kindness all around us and Arkansas Diagnostic Center wants to promote that which is why his medical facility is involved.
I interviewed Monica right after the surprise gift.  She admitted to being caught totally off guard and was grateful.  But she said we need more people to adopt children who are living in Foster Care.  She passionately expressed how often these children are just innocent victims of an unfortunate situation. They just need someone to love them.
Some how $1,000 seems rather small to the monumental task she’s taken on but she did it out of love.  And that’s something you can’t put a price on.
